A shed rarely stands alone — check what it’s touching before demolition begins.
A backyard shed can start as a single project and grow into a small ecosystem: an added lean-to, a rainwater tank, a rigged-up power point, or a fence panel that leans against its wall for support. Before arranging shed demolition and removal, it helps to see the whole picture rather than just the shed itself. Look at what the shed has grown into
Sheds rarely stay as they were built. Owners add shelving, awnings, second doors, lean-to extensions or a rigged power supply for tools and lighting. Walk around the outside first and note anything added after the original structure, since these additions can have their own fixings, footings or roofline. Photograph each addition separately from the main shed body.
Check whether anything actually depends on the shed for support. A garden trellis, a lean-to woodpile cover or a stretch of fencing sometimes uses the shed wall as a structural prop. Removing the shed without a plan for that dependency can leave a second, unplanned job behind.
Check every wall for a shared line
Stand at each corner and look along the boundary. Does the shed sit hard against a fence, share a wall with a neighbouring structure, or sit close enough that access from one side is impossible? Photograph the full length of each wall, including where it meets the ground and any point where it touches a fence or another building.
Do not assume a gap that looks small from a distance is workable. A shed built close to a boundary can restrict the room needed to dismantle it safely and load material without disturbing a neighbouring property. If loose contents are blocking a clear view of the walls, ordinary items such as boxes or old furniture can be discussed separately as household rubbish removal so the structure can be assessed on its own.
Read the roof and guttering before the walls
Rainwater habits reveal a lot. Trace the guttering to see whether it drains to a tank, a stormwater point or simply onto the ground. Look for water stains, sagging sheets or rust lines along seams and fixing points. These signs help show whether the roof will come apart cleanly or whether sections have weakened and shifted.
Note whether power runs to the shed for lighting, a workbench or security sensors. Do not attempt to isolate wiring yourself. A qualified electrician should confirm the supply is safe to disconnect before demolition proceeds.
Separate contents from structure
Everything sitting inside the shed needs a decision before the walls come down. Sort tools, mower parts, timber offcuts and general storage into groups: keep, relocate, donate or remove. Paint, fuel, oil, pesticides and gas bottles are not ordinary demolition rubbish, so keep lids closed, leave products in original containers and never combine partly used products to save space.
Fixed shelving, a built-in workbench or wall-mounted racking is a different matter. These items are part of the demolition scope, not loose contents, and should stay in place until the job is confirmed rather than being pulled down informally to “help.”
Watch for older materials
Many Brisbane sheds built before the 1990s used fibro cement sheeting for walls or roofing, and its condition is not something to judge by eye. If sheeting looks older, is cracked, or its composition is uncertain, stop and arrange an assessment before any further disturbance.
Rust, corrosion and timber rot are separate issues but deserve the same caution. Do not push on weakened panels or climb an unstable structure to inspect it more closely. A photograph taken from a safe distance answers most early questions.
Decide what happens to the slab
State clearly whether the concrete base, footings or paving around the shed need to be removed or should remain. This detail changes the job significantly and should never be assumed from a phrase like “just take the shed away.” If fibro sheeting is confirmed as asbestos, licensed asbestos removal must be completed before that decision is finalised.
Send a clear picture, not a guess
Provide photographs of each wall, the roof, the base, any additions and the surrounding access. Note rough dimensions, the materials involved and whether power or water connects to the structure. If a new structure, garden bed or open space is planned for the site, mention that goal so the finished handover matches what comes next.
